RUHR Fellowship

Eighth Honors
Experience
The Ruhr Fellowship Program in Germany was one of the most meaningful and challenging academic experiences I have completed. Over eight weeks, I worked alongside a diverse cohort of students from across the United States and Europe, participated in leadership and innovation seminars, and completed a research internship at the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency, and Energy Economics (IE³) at TU Dortmund University.

Throughout the program, I was able to explore how Germany is navigating the transition toward renewable energy and sustainable industrial systems. Workshops with universities and companies across the Ruhr region exposed me to real-world approaches to decarbonization, digitalization, and infrastructure planning. These conversations helped me understand how policy, engineering, and economics intersect when designing large-scale energy solutions, and it broadened my perspective on the responsibilities that come with technological innovation.

My internship at IE³ was one of the most impactful parts of the experience. I contributed to research related to flexible transport and distribution networks, renewable system integration, and efficient energy use. Working with German researchers pushed me to collaborate across cultural and disciplinary boundaries, communicate clearly, and adapt to different workplace expectations. It also deepened my interest in energy systems research and showed me how data, modeling, and engineering come together in practical decision making.

Equally important was the personal growth that came from living and working abroad. Navigating a new environment, building friendships with an international cohort, and experiencing German culture firsthand strengthened my adaptability, independence, and confidence.

Completing the Ruhr Fellowship helped me clarify my long-term goals: I want to work in areas where technology supports sustainable development and global collaboration. This experience showed me the type of impact I hope to contribute to, thoughtful, responsible, and grounded in a global understanding of the challenges ahead.
